A Malware Classification

Virus: Simply speaking, computer viruses are a type of self-replicating program code that are installed onto existing programs without user consent. Their definitions can be broken down much further though, by the type of objects they are infecting, the methods they use to select their hosts, or the techniques used to attack. They can appear in numerous forms as well, ranging anywhere from email attachments to malicious download links on the Internet, and can perform many harmful tasks on your OS. Nowadays viruses are quite rare because cybercriminals look to have more control over malware distribution, otherwise, new samples quickly fall into the hands of antivirus vendors.

Worm: Worms are considered to be a subdivision of viruses since they are also self-replicating programs; however unlike viruses, they do not infect existing files. Instead, worms are installed directly onto their victims’ computers in a single instance of “self standing” code, before finding opportunities to spread or tunnel themselves into other systems through things like the manipulation of vulnerable computer networks. Worms, as with viruses, can also be defined further by breaking down the methods in which they infect, like through email, instant messaging or file sharing.  Some worms exist as standalone files, while others reside in computer memory only.

Trojan: Quite opposite from viruses and worms, Trojans are non-replicating programs that pretend to be legitimate, but are actually designed to carry out harmful actions against their victims. Trojans get their name from acting in the same manner as the infamous Greek Trojan horse, concealing themselves as useful programs while quietly carrying out their actual destructive functions. Since Trojans are not self-replicating, they do not spread by themselves. But thanks to the increased scope of the Internet, it has become very easy for them to reach many users. They’ve also grown to now come in many forms, like Backdoor Trojans (which try to take over remote administration of their victims’ computers) and Trojan Downloaders (which install malicious code).

Ransomware: Ransomware is malware that is designed to extort money from its victims. It can appear as a pop up, phishing link, or malicious website, and once acted on, will trigger a vulnerability in the user’s system, locking out the keyboard and screen, and sometimes even the entire computer. It’s intended to scam people by falsely accusing them of doing things like using pirated software or watching illegal videos, displaying warning pop ups, trying to make them act quickly by saying the warning message will only be removed if a fine is paid.

Rootkit: A rootkit is a special form of malware, designed specifically to hide its presence and actions from both the user and any existing protection software they have installed on their system. It’s able to do this via deep integration with the operating system, sometimes even starting before the operating system does (this variety of rootkit has its own name, bootkits). Sophisticated antivirus software is still able to detect rootkits and get rid of them though.

Backdoor (RAT): A Backdoor, or a Remote Administration Tool, is an application that allows a person (the system administrator or a cybercriminal) access to a computer system without user consent or knowledge. Depending on the RAT functionality, an attacker could install and launch other software, send keystrokes, download or delete files, switch the microphone and/or camera on, or log computer activity and send it back to the attacker.

Downloader:  These infections are small pieces of code that are used to quietly take executable files, or files that command your computer to perform indicated tasks, from the server. Once downloaded, through things like email attachments and malicious images, they communicate back to a command server and are then instructed to download additional malware onto your system.

Open Government Progress | The White House

Today in London, more than 1,000 delegates from across the globe are gathering for the Open Government Partnership Annual Summit to celebrate an unprecedented international collaboration between government and civil society to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, harness new technologies, and transform the way governments serve and engage with their citizens.

Launched in September 2011 by President Obama and seven other country leaders, the Open Government Partnership was founded on the principle that the strength and vibrancy of nations depend on an active civil society and robust engagement between governments and their citizens to advance shared goals of peace, prosperity, and the well-being of all people. In just over two years the OGP has made incredible progress – expanding to more than 60 countries that have made more than 1000 commitments to make governments around the globe more open, accountable, and transparent to their citizens.

Building on these efforts to create more efficient, effective, and accountable governments, the Obama Administration today issued a new report, outlining ambitious new open-government commitments, including modernizing and improving the administration of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which provides the public with access to government information, and expanding the President’s open data initiatives across the Federal Government to fuel entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth. These commitments, and many others, will be part of a second U.S. Open Government National Action Plan to be released later this year.

Congressman John Barrow’s Reply – Preserving Medicare, Social Security and Veteran benefits

Dear Ms. Clark,

Thank you for contacting me in support of preserving Medicare, Social Security and Veteran benefits.  You have my steadfast support.

Today, millions of Americans benefit from the insurance Medicare provides, and thousands right here in Georgia’s 12thDistrict count on Medicare as their only source of medical care.  Like Medicare, Social Security is a critical program that our seniors have paid into for decades, and I’m opposed to cutting benefits or privatizing the program.

Our Veterans have earned their benefits through years of service and sacrifice to our nation.  Cutting these benefits would only hurt those who have devoted their lives to protecting and serving our county.  The United States made a promise to take care of those who serve our country, and I intend to keep that promise.

We must restore discipline to the nation’s finances, but I refuse to place the burden of fiscal reform on our seniors, veterans, and vulnerable populations.  I believe we can reach agreement on a budget, and I’m committed to doing so while preserving Medicare, Social Security, and Veterans benefits.

Thanks again for caring enough to get involved, and please don’t hesitate to contact me again in the future.

Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

For an International Terrorism symposium given at GSU I and a team member presented a skit of pro and con concerning Kurdistan as a state.

Kurdistan is composed of 4 sections that happen to be a part of 4 different nations.

These Nations were created without transparent means, nor from a democratic outcome.

The four states that hold Kurdistan at the moment is Iraq, Syria, Turkey, & Iran.

It is a corporate energy resource endowed area.

It was the opinion of the audience after theatrical presentation that Karastan should be a single state.

However, it was the presenters position that Kurdistan was  banking on a non preferred resource was not embraceable.

Congressman John Barrow’s Reply Concerning Syria:

Dear Rep. Clark,

Thanks for contacting me over your concerns about the crisis in Syria.

The use of chemical weapons to kill civilians violates longstanding international agreements regulating the law of war.  However, the use of American troops to enforce these agreements must be a last resort.  We cannot always be the world’s police and must exhaust all other options before resorting to force.

That’s why I’m encouraged that the United States and our international partners reached a diplomatic agreement to force Syria to give up its chemical weapons stockpile.  If Syria fails to live up to its commitments, I’m prepared to consider all options.  However, I will only support actions that clearly outline our objectives and ensure that the U.S. is not drawn into another land war.

Thanks for caring enough to get involved, and please don’t hesitate to contact me again in the future.

Wikileaks – Research – Part 2 of 2

While conducting vetting research, I came across this recent attack on Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. It is of note because of who she is and Voice America sponsoring her , along with Oprah favoring her.
========
While discussing the bust of the Silk Road, Alvarez goes out of his way to link Assange and Snowden to the Silk Road.

BTW, a quick side note; this guy has an eerie profile that matches guys like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, which makes me wonderer we are getting a peek into a generational shift in thinking about markets and the government that could have some really scary consequences.

Ahh yea, like scary young lonely white guys

with the smarts to cause some serious damage

and who are up to no good. Somebody get them a girl friend, please.

The program concludes by joking   about the silk road is what happens when young people do not have jobs.

Wikileaks – Research – Part 1 of 2

Chief Joseph Nez Perce ... No. 2 U.S. official...

Astroturfing- Astroturfing Syndicate

To many these terms may be new or even unknown.

Astroturfing is defined by Wikipedia as:

Astroturfing is the practice of masking the sponsors of a message (e.g. political, advertising, or public relations) to give the appearance of it coming from a disinterested, grassroots participant.

Syndicate is defined by Wikipedia as:

A syndicate is a self-organizing group of individuals, companies, corporations or entities formed to transact some specific business, or to promote a common interest. In most cases formed groups aim to scale up their profits. Although there are many legal syndicates formed around the world, people tend to link the term syndicate to various criminal activities.

Astroturfing Syndicate would be the combination of the two

Organized groups of individuals, companies, corporations or entities that practice the masking of sponsors of a message to give the appearance of it coming from a disinterested, grassroots participants.

Defining social behavior in the digital realm is processing at a very quick pace. In addition, as the digital space becomes more ingrained with daily lives the effects are felt across the human spectrum. In fact, many people do not go one single day without hearing an audio clip or viewing a video clip. Moreover, those that do not luxuriate within the internet are encapsulated into the digital realm by television and or radio. Eventually, all are encapsulated because even if the person lives in a remote location, those that govern are encapsulated into the digital age.

In essence digital media on the internet is more permanent than that which is not. An individual can listen to a recording made 2 years ago as easily as one made last week, especially if the information is mirrored or the site that hosts it is maintained.

As a criminologist the sociology aspect of this is profound and ground breaking.

Many people witnessed the James Clapper lies to congress. Many people witnessed James Clapper confess to perjury when Clapper said that he had chosen “I thought was the most truthful or least most untruthful manner” when he testified.

Yet, he has not been charged. However, astroturfing syndicates engage in a form of witness intimidation.

That is one notable example many have knowledge of from their own digital experiences. Yet, there are many crimes the general population witness, such as crimes committed by BP during the oil spill clean-up of the US Gulf Coast region, that are not as globally known, but very well-known regionally nonetheless. Astroturfing syndicates are engaging in witness cowing and intimidation.

It would be naïve, if not unbalanced to think that the cowing and intimidation patterns do not go from digital to non-digital instances.

Witness intimidation is a crime.

Research has shown that astroturfers seek out individuals to cow and intimidate. That criminal anti-social behavior is called stalking, be it digital or non-digital.

Detectives Working on Police Tips Line Must Sift and Coax – NYTimes.com.

Tips are vital to solving crimes. Not only to police detectives , but also to researchers and investigative journalist.  Most fraud and corruption crimes are brought to the attention of the investigator by tips.

Investigators and researchers may have a keener sense of red-flags than most, but they are not any more psychic than other people.

It is important that if you see or know of fraud or corruption to speak up. At the very least document it for when you are in a safer, better place to speak up.

It is through individual activism that we all make the world a better place to live.

Hernandez’s Girlfriend Charged with Perjury for Allegedly Throwing Out Evidence

Perjury is so often not looked at as a serious crime. Of course, in a murder case a person caught lying should be harshly punished.
But when our elected and appointed leaders do not harshly punish those that lie in congressional hearings, it radiates a corrupt culture where lying about gravely important things is permissible and the norm.
It is a shameful thing for a society to accept.

U.S.

Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez’s girlfriend pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge on Tuesday, reports the Associated Press. She allegedly lied to a Massachusetts grand jury about disposing of evidence in Hernandez’s murder case.

Hernandez pled not guilty in June to the murder of Odin Lloyd, the boyfriend of Hernandez’s sister. He is being held without bail.

Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg claims that Hernandez’s girlfriend, Shayanna Jenkins, lied to a grand jury in August about throwing out a box Hernandez asked her to “get rid of” the day after Lloyd’s killing. She allegedly took a box of evidence from the basement of the home she shared with Hernandez, put it in a trash bag, covered it with baby clothes and drove away with it. Jenkins told the jury that she threw the box out in a dumpster but that she couldn’t remember where.

The Carlisle Company – Pure Awesomeness

The Quest For A Brown Carlisle Bucket

– A tale of an Ethical company

About 8 weeks ago the founder,  Julia Clark, found a very young puppy at the end of the driveway.

Introducing Greenbean! He found me before dawn a short while back! He was the first to leave his litter with his parents. For a couple of mornings, I heard what sounded like a puppy whining. I thought it must be some sort of bird at first. The third time I went decided to get a closer listen. It was just cresting dawn as I looked across the field. I could clearly tell it was a puppy’s cry. I tromped across the field to the roadside and am greeted by this little fellow.

You can read the epic tale here

About a year ago, The Organization moved into a 2000+ square foot offices-studio-homestead. The move and the campus has not been formally announced. But a few photos have been posted.

The New Campus of The Julia Clark Organization

The New Campus of The Julia Clark Organization

It is an old 1935 bootleggers home with wood floors throughout the building. Well, there is wood floors now the carpet was all ripped out.

With hardwood floors throughout, Julia had bought an industrial mop, but had not bought a bucket and wringer. Thus the quest for a mop bucket and wringer.

The quest lead Julia to Home Depot and finding out what a wonderful company Carlilse is.

From Home Depot online store, Julia selected what she thought was a brown Carlisle mop bucket and wringer. She was sorely disappointed when her order arrived and it was only the wringer.

She checked her order slip. The order slip only listed a wringer. She went back online and checked the online order. With close and careful review, it was clear that what she had ordered was only a wringer. Disappointment does not begin to describe the let down; Julia was crushed.

Julia had eagerly awaited to mop the 2000+ square foot building clean of puppy piddles with assistance of a professional grade mop bucket and wringer to match her industrial mop. A mop that was not easily wrung by hand. Moreover, the puppy was becoming more able-bodied by the day!

Puppy Perturbation

Puppy Perturbation

She contacted Home Depot’s customer service. They were not helpful at all. Firstly, they did not have a matching brown Carlisle bucket for the wringer. Secondly, the return process to exchange the Carlisle wringer for a complete mop bucket and wringer was going to be costly. Even when transferred to a supervisor the best he was going to be able to do was wave the restocking fee!

Julia decided she was just going to order a brown Carlisle bucket for her brown Carlisle wringer. There was not one to be had new or used anywhere on the web. Every place sold the brown mop bucket and wringer as one unit. And there simply where not any used brown Carlisle buckets to be found.

With that discovery, The Brown Carlisle Bucket had become a token.

This sparked an impromptu letter to the Carlisle Company.

Finding the correct person to write was a feat in itself. Julia made her best estimation and jotted off this letter:

Note sections are redacted for privacy.

Dear Keith Sisco and Amy Yore

I am the director of a very small not-for-profit NGO, foundation, company whatever you would like to call it. My whole life is spent toward curbing fraud and corruption. I have no kids or family to speak of My foundation is my life.

I had a terrible experience with Home Depot and your product. I would like to share this with you, if I may have a moment of your time.

I had $— to spend at Home Depot. This was not any $— I had received this was a gift card I had specifically selected so I could to buy a brown Carlisle mop bucket with a wringer for the office and studio.

I was very excited. I had diligently for a year detailed ——- and ———– for ——— Program of the University of Virginia and had a choice of gift cards to select from. I choose Home Depot because of the brown Carlisle mop bucket and wringer. Brown was a soft gentle color in contrast to my harsh work as a fraud examiner.

During that year I had moved into a very large 1935 homestead that is ———————– of Clean By —- that I converted into offices and studio. With hardwood floors throughout, I had bought an industrial mop, but had not bought a bucket and wringer. Thus my quest for my mop bucket and wringer.

Recently one of my neighbors dogs brought a puppy to my doorstep. I did not have a dog and was in a large place on my own, though a puppy was not in the budgets. I kept the puppy and name him Greenbean.

As puppies do they make puppy piddles. I was going to need to mop daily. My need for a mop and wringer became urgent!

I chose to use my $— gift card to buy a mop bucket and wringer. I set my heart on the Carlisle brown mop bucket and wringer. And selected the Home Depot gift card that let me purchase it.

Prior to ——————, I worked the high volume tourism and venue industry, I was very excited to have some industrial equipment for my new venue.

All of this came crushing down when I realized Home Depot had pulled a fast one on me.

And they blamed it on the Carlisle company.

The Home Depot Deception

Living so very remote, I am very accustom to shopping online.

I had selected the Home Depot card because of the Brown Carlisle mop bucket and wringer.

While shopping, I thought it would be nice to have a high-end Carlisle, but the organization would be fine with a lower end one. I was still very happy with the Carlisle selection, plus I had funds to select other items with the year-long earned gift card.

I received the product and it was absolutely not what I expected. I expected a mop bucket and wringer. I received only a wringer. I was very sorely disappointed.

This is the page I selected from

As you can see Home Depot shows it as a combo, but it is not a combo. The first photo shows a Carlisle wringer only, then the next is a Rubbermaid combo then the next is a what appears to be a Carlisle combo.

I ordered the third one. When it arrived it was only a wringer.

Though I truly wanted a brown mop bucket and wringer. I could not order the matching bucket from Home Depot. I could not find a brown Carlisle mob bucket anywhere on the web, not even a used one!

Before I hung up with the supervisor I implored to him to please bring this to the correct department attention. I do not believe he will.

This is a deceptive practice.

I am asking two things of you Mr. Sisco and Ms. Yore

Do you have a brown bucket?

And

Would you spank Home Depot for me?

Carlisle is too good of a company to be represented in such a questionable manner.

Truly Yours,

Julia Clark

Julia did not get a response from the late Wednesday night letter. So on Friday she followed up with a phone call to the customer service number.

The first person she spoke with was Janice Murray. Julia was certain that a first line customer service representative would not be able to help in a satisfactory way. Janice Murray implored to Julia to just give her a chance. Reluctantly, Julia did give her a chance, though after experiencing Home Depot’s customer service, she had her doubts.

Julia read the letter to Janice and at 3:10 pm on Friday sent this letter to Janice:

Ms. Murray,

Thank you for take the time to assist me on the quest for a brown bucket to match the brown Carlisle wringer. Our conversation was very reassuring.

After sending the letter to Ms. Murray, Julia closed shop and shut the phones down. It was time for a bit of R&R.

Still dispirited, Julia logged in Monday and read this email:

Julia

I have talked to my supervisor and we are going to send you out the bucket for all your inconvenience. I apologize you had such a horrible experience with home depot. You should see the bucket the end of next week

Thanks

Janice

Amazingly, that had been sent at 4:03 pm on Friday, not only that but there were voice mails waiting even earlier than the letter. The response time was astonishing!

The customer service gets better the package arrived on Tuesday!

Julia quickly replied to the letter Ms. Murray had written, which had fallen to the back burner:

Ms. Murray,

Thank you very much!

How very revitalizing The Julia Clark Organization’s experience with the Carlisle Company was to me personally.

I in no way expected the delivery of the brown Carlisle bucket to be so very quick.

After a very difficult long weekend of investigations the UPS truck pulls up to the office front door today. And lo and behold a brown Carlisle bucket. Or I should say The Elusive Brown Carlisle Bucket was delivered to the office!

I am very impressed at how very quickly the package arrived. The care and concern I experienced with the Carlisle company and specifically with your customer service moved me.

I must admit The Brown Carlisle Bucket has become a most warmly regarded award. It deserves a place of honor on my Love Me wall.

Respectfully,

Julia Clark

Janice called right away after receiving the Thank you email from Julia. Julia got Janice’s reassurance that the Home Depot platform would be corrected. They chatted for a while about how vendors can skim through shipping and other things Julia had noticed with the Home Depot experience.

It was a week before Julia could get to the floors of the office-studio-homestead like she wanted. When she finally opened the box much to her surprise was a full Carlisle wringer and mop bucket set.

The Elusive Brown Carlisle Bucket

The Elusive Brown Carlisle Bucket

It took another week to get the office-studio-homestead in order after the puppy perturbation.

Things are now in order. Home Depot has a brown Carlisle bucket for sale to match the brown Carlisle wringer. The puppy is very respectful of the clean floors. There has not been one puppy puddle accident since mopping with the Carlisle Brown Bucket and wringer. Coincidence? Maybe. But maybe, this Brown Carlisle Bucket has taken on mythic quality that can only be achieved around exceptional people and companies.

TL;DR Version:

Carlisle is one of the best companies around. The ethics of the Carlisle company is above par.

Home Depot sucks. Avoid Home Depot if you can.

Five Lessons from a Hate Crime Detective

Lesson 1: Hate Crimes Affect Everyone and Victims Need Support

Hate crimes are not just about race or religion. According to Vest, a hate crime is a crime committed by someone who is substantially motivated by his or her bias against the other persons\’:

Race/ethnicity/nationality

Religion

Sexual orientation

Gender

Disability

Perceived association with the above

Law enforcement should be on the lookout for these biases when investigating every crime. Vest also noted that victims of hate crimes often need more ongoing support than other victims, but this support can get lost in law enforcement\’s pursuit of hate crime prosecutions.

Lesson 2: Hate Crimes are Message Crimes

Vest notes that most hate crimes send a message of terror to an entire group and community; the victim is a vessel to send this message. For instance, the burning of a cross on an African-American family\’s lawn is a message of terror to the family, but it also sends a message to other African-American families that they are not welcome in the neighborhood, and they may be next.

Lesson 3: Be Sure to Report and Document Incidents

Officers need to document every hate and bias incident. Vest noted that a meticulous approach to reporting and documenting incidents helps her department eventually take many of these perpetrators off the streets. She explained that even relatively minor incidents like tire slashings need to be documented: “On the face it may not look like a hate incident, but when other incidents happen, it\’s important to have all this recorded to build a case. Don\’t discount small incidents.”

Lesson 4: Identify Symbols of Hate

Vest and her colleagues keep meticulous records on perpetrators. When they encounter members of hate groups, officers photograph tattoos, clothing, boots, hate paraphernalia, and anything that can be evidence of bias and hate against certain groups. When searching cars and homes they always look for signs and symbols of hate group affiliation. Graffiti identification is also an important tool.

When two young women from the Dominican Republic and their friend were attacked in Mast Park in San Diego County, the patrol officers knew that some kind of bias might be involved before they even took a full report from the victims because of the skinhead graffiti that had already been identified in this location. This knowledge and the victim\’s statement helped the detectives quickly identify and arrest the perpetrators.

Lesson 5: Work with Your Community to Reduce and Prevent Hate Crimes

Hate and bias crimes can tear communities apart. Preventive work to identify possible perpetrators can serve to make the community unfriendly to those who commit these types of crimes. Working closely with communities to build positive relationships will help make it easier for victims to report incidents when they happen. “Building strong and positive ties with communities can help alleviate some of this fear and lead to strong community-police relationships,” said Vest.

This article bring to mind a series of events when The Julian Clark Organization was tapped by Anonymous to assist as a liaison between the Operation Anonymous Pedo Hunters and various national, state, and local governments.

The Julian Clark Organization has not released the files related to the Operation Pedo hunter, therefore certain information is purposefully obscured or absent.

During Operation Pedo Hunter there was a extended conversations concerning how to to identify users of the TOR network.

Some of the ideas discussed were funneling the users by mass node take over to specific site(s), infecting specific computers , targeting users users by abilities an usefulness. The goals being have the targeted user(s) as a marker to map the Onion, locate high value targets ( in this case it was supposedly focused on pedophilia centric sites), and maintain the marker once the user left the onion, then use that marker to identify them for take down or to use as a mole to descend deeper into the Onion network.
